Gogoi Govt has failed : UMF
Guwahati, Jan 10 : The United Minority Front (UMF) chairman, HRA Chowdhury, has criticized the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government in the State for its alleged failure to ensure socio-economic development of the religious and linguistic minorities during the past four years of its rule in Assam.
Talking to news persons here yesterday, Mr Chowdhury referred to the stand taken by the minority cell of the Congress demanding 38 Assembly seats for religious minorities of a total 126 in the State for the next Assembly elections. This demand was based on its claim that in all those 38 seats, the Muslim population was more than 45 per cent.
Mr Chowdhury, however, differed with this view and stated that it was not the numbers, but the attitude of the Government which was more important for the benefit of the minorities in the State. According to the UMF chairman, despite having about 20 elected MLAs from the minority community in the present Congress party ruling the State, the State Government had done almost nothing for the benefit of the minorities.
He alleged that instead of upgrading the quality of life for the minorities, the State Government was "using the Illegal Migrants Determination Tribunal (IMDT) Act as a tool to pursue its vote bank politics".
He further alleged that while the Congress used the minority for its vote-bank politics, the BJP was against the minority in pursuance of its Hindutva.
Mr Chowdhury was of the view that the AGP should take the lead to combine all "anti-Congress and anti-BJP secular and democratic forces" in the State to emerge as a viable alternative before the next Assembly polls.
The UMF have forget to know that AGP , how it came to power in 1985 , instead of all these the muslims of northeast should have their own political identity and should not relly upon other , whose head are in loffy .
