Anjuman-e-Himayath-e-Islam of Chennai (Madras) is one of the oldest educational institutions in South India. It was started in 1890 under the auspices of the Nawab of Arcot, Muhammad Munawar Khan Bahadur and a few committed and dedicated community leaders, for the care of orphan children in the precincts of the Wallajah Mosque. Shortly an orphanage for girls was also started nearby.
Anjuman Himayath-e Islam School Building
In 1934 Justice Basheer Ahmad Sayeed, Janab Niamathullah, Janab Abdul Hamid Khan and other luminaries acquired the present premises of the Anjuman. The foundation for the new building was laid in 1948. And the first structure of the Anjuman Mosque was built in 1969.The Girls Home Foundation was laid by the Bohra spiritual leader Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin in 1974 with his initial contribution of Rs. 20,000.There has been no turning back since then. Anjuman-e-Himayath-e-Islam has grown from strength to strength with the good work and goodwill which has made Anjuman the edifice that it is today.
Anjuman Himayath-e Mosque
There is however a lot more to be done as times change and society changes brining about a different perception of life and goals to both the leaders and the beneficiaries of this aesthetic institution. There are millions of children who are orphans and face social, educational and economic handicaps. The Anjuman reaches out to this section of society. It provides a home for them along with education and impart the moral values of humanity, which reflect the spirit of Islam. To fulfil its purpose the Anjuman runs a home for boys and another for girls where around 700 children receive care, guidance and physical and mental comfort, directly addressing the needs of the target group with their growth and development in view.
Anjuman himayath-e Islam vocational training class
Anjuman’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School is situated within the campus and serves not only children under its care but also children of all communities as well from outside. From this academic year the school is geared to conduct classes for the 11th and 12th standards. Anjuman school children have participated in many individual competitions and won prizes. Anjuman gives a lot of attention for the physical development of the children for games and bodybuilding. The children are taught Karate, trained for rugby, basket ball and others by professionals. The Anjuman gives special attention to children with learning difficulties through special education and functional literacy. The Anjuman also runs AHI Academy for Women which is equipped to conduct training programs and classes for women from all walks of life in various fields ranging from the Religion of Islam, vocational training in tailoring and crafts, computers and household arts. In addition to this free welfare programs for the socially and educationally disadvantaged are also conducted. The Al-Hikmah Weekend Islamic School is a prime programme for the creative learning of morals and values of children of the community. Anjuman’s Himayath Industrial Training Centre conducts ITI courses for men to equip them in the field of A.C. Mechanics, Electrician, Wireman and Plumbing. It also conduct courses for the educationally backward children in a condensed form of a similar nature to equip them vocationally. Anjuman also offers scholarships to children requiring aid for higher studies on the basis of merit cum means for promoting the education of children. The Anjuman’s next project is the Islamic Information and Research Centre which will include a well-equipped library to house a wide variety of books and journals on the subject, including infotech to Islamic Information. The Anjuman plans to have an auditorium as part of the project. Anjuman campus has a beautiful mosque which accommodates the ever-increasing Musallis attending congregational prayers. The mosque also caters to the needs of the children in the locality for teaching Arabic and Islam in the evenings. Presently a reference library of Islamic books with a wide variety of cassettes also runs on the mosque premises. Last Ramadan, a "Ladies Namaz Hall" adjoining the mosque was opened.
